A Classic Example, your thoughts?

This is really an input your opinion type of question really. I’ve always been adamant about the use of links as an answer. I just returned from getting crickets for my Arowana and observed a nice beautiful African cichlid at Petland Discounts. He’s a drop off and I’m going to make a trade to get him. It’s already a full adult too, and quite a monster.

My point here, is before I would just go and get him, I wanted to look up the care and feeding ect… of this species. Tilapia Buttikoferi. Now look at what happens when a person just spits out a link for info. Compare these two links.

Being I am a member of this forum, I naturally went here first.

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1442

But to compare other places

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=16&cat=1920&articleid=2487

This really concerns me about answers given in this forum, and I know some really advocate Peteducation, but look at the vast differences in what each site says.
Consider how many people come on here asking us for advice. Now what if I were to take either link and say here you go? Someone else comes along and posts the other link? What is the person seeking help supposed to think? I don’t know how you all feel, but this is a classic example of just why I despise link usage as an answer, instead of practical hands on working knowledge.

It’s not to say that people offering experience is the absolute best way to answer, as how many times have we all seen people say I keep my Oscar in a 30 gallon tank so it’s ok? But input given based sheerly on a link with no working knowledge is a recipe to have fish deaths that are so unecessary.
Even better yet to support this. Wiki……

So now we have input of 125, 75 and 55 gallons. How in the world would anyone who’s never kept this fish before know, which link or advise is correct?
Tolak, I cannot tell you how jealous I am of your set up lol. I’ve got a decent group of breeding Africans and I hear it over and over from the old lady about how she don’t want the place to turn into a fish store. I have a hard time letting my African fry being eaten, I so with I had a set up like that!!

I agree if you already have input you know to be true, it’s not bad to list it as a reference, but not like as the basis of your point. I suppose if it directly is the answer needed, that’s one thing, but too many times on here, the links are crap and it’s clear the person answering doesn’t know their head from their rear.
Carl, your input has always been the best, clearly a cut above, but as well I think you also know, some will say a short blurb, and then say here, read this over. I mean like, what kind of quality is this? The one thing I can say, when you answer, you give the actual answer, and just use the link in support of proving your point, as a reference should do.

Whereas a person who just simply cut’s and pastes from a site that says, “Oscars need at least 20000 gallons” and says there you go, posts the site, it’s like you know, that’s just plain garbage. There’s so many times, not thinking or analysis behind sites, and I hate that.

In this case, I’m actually stuck now lol. I seriously don’t know if this monster will be ok in my 180 with my other Africans or not. I see so many different inputs, I’m truthfully confused, but thinking cichlid-forum has never led me astray.

angelfish- Grammies? what is your opinion of keeping them together in one large tank?

one of our aquariums started to leak and we put the graumies in with the angels.they have left each other alone and seem peaceful enough.should i keep them togather permantly?

Anthias and Discus in one tank?

I’m thinking about buying some fish and Anthias and Discus are the most beautiful in my opinion… is it possible to keep them in one tank?

Loach! opinion or fact??

Today i went to the nearest petstore and i asked them if they carried clown loaches ( i wasn’t planning on getting one today but if they did i would have asked them to reserve for me
apparently not.. so i left my number with the pet store so they can contact me if they get a stock of them.
asking someone who works at the pet store and he told me
how loaches exceeding 6” is kinda rare…
since bacteria+ diseases+ ammonia is a problem with everyone who owns an aquarium.. i recently found out that increasing the heat will help… and someone told me from an earlier question that itll reduce the amount of oO2.. but right now i have an air stone set up in the tank..
and now heres the questions xD
1. Loaches exceeding 6-7 inches is rare?
2. will the air stone help distribute air in the tank if i have to increase the temperature?
3. Around how much is a clown loach?
4. can i feed them vegetables? and shrimp? and if so what kinds? (has phobia of worms)
5.i need ALOT of help on this!

Does anyone out there have a wall-hanging aquarium?

I’d just like your opinion on it, if you have a wall aquarium. For example, do the fish do well in there? Does the aquarium stay on the wall all right? How difficult is it to clean? Thanks for your feedback!
