I’ve had my platys for about 4 weeks now. 2 female Mickey Mouse and 2 male sunburst. Now, I didn’t know how to tell the difference in male & female when I first bought them, and Petsmart failed to mention it too. One of my females is pregnant, and I really don’t want to deal with fry. My tank is only 30 gallons, and besides the 4 platys, I have 2 black mollies and 2 small catfish. Will the babies get eaten as soon as they’re born? I think that’s cruel, but I don’t know what else to do. I wasn’t expecting this and am new to the aquarium hobby… Do I need to get rid of my male platys? I really don’t want to get rid of any of them….

My guppy gave birth the other day, and after the first few days, there were six strong, smart, fast ones left. (i also have swordtails and mollies and a loach in the same 20g tank).
So anyway, four of these babies lookes completely normal, just like small versions of their parents.

The other two look completely different. They have big jet black eyes, their bodies are a little bit darker and a little bit bigger, and their mouth is at the bottom of their face, so it resembles a small cichlid. I have two female mollies and a female loach, but it couldn’t have been their babies, could it? If it helps at all, I don’t think they’re genetically mutated guppies, because they are bigger and faster than the normal looking babies… unless it was some sort of good mutation.

I dont normally get into sharing my day here but I want to share today with all of you. It started out bad, really bad like most of the days Ive had for a while. However, it brought about my best friend taking me to the Camden Aquarium in NJ. I didn’t even want to go but I did anyway. Well, as stupid as this may sound I was just hypnotized by the sea life there. Fish are cool, yeah but some of them… WOW. I had no clue Tuna was so big, or that seahorses were the only creatures where the male carries and delivers the babies, or that starfish mothers cuddle their young. And some of these fish had the brightest colors Ive ever seen, some really looked painted. I half expected one to start talking in a cartoon voice! LOL I sat in what looked like a theater and looked at these sea creatures while classical music played. Call me “gay” if you want. But sometimes a moment of wonder can change your day. Do you agree?

my pond if really really dirty and i havent gave my fish any food in a long time. i was cleaning out the leaves on the bottom and i notice i had babies. it winter and how is this. they are half inch long, how old you think they are? i dont add anything to my pond but food here and there. i used to but the keep dying so i stop and they are still alive. how is this? im starting back feeding them, what is something good for the babies? what can i use to clean my pond? dont know how many babies i have cause i cant see in the water!! that dirty!

I just have 2 guppies, male and female. They have so far eaten any fry and seem to be very happy in the 5 gallon tank. But the pond snails are taking over! I’ve reassembled the cleaned the tank twice, which took care of the larger snails, but now all the babies are out.
