Not only lives, but can thrive as well.
The “mangrove killifish” would be ideal, and more than one. I can’t remember it’s scientific name, sorry. It can be googled though.
Fertilizes itself. Lives in trees. Can live for days without water.
Often lives packed head to tail in insect made tunnels in the trees.
NA native.
Available, but I doubt if most pet stores carry them.
I haven’t found much info on breeding them yet, but if anyone has kept them, can you give me more info, please?
Personally, I’m not looking for one at the time, just mentioning it as a fish of interest, and asking for info from anyone that has had them.
I wouldn’t keep them in 1 gallon either, but think they’d do much better than bettas in that small a container. Bettas, never.
Elizabeth K: Try Rivulus marmoratus if you haven’t already. I did see one article from someone that keeps them.
BIGgourami: Sounds good to me. ; p
Alright, I know you’re looking for this fish, but a betta fish would be perfect, honestly. They’re cheaper. They do perfectly fine in 1 gallon, and they dont need filterization. I’m getting one tomorrow too (: You can get on the wall fish bowls, that are easily maintained.

you should never have a fish, no matter what it is, in a tank that small. it’s just cruel to do that to any fish.
the only time you could do it is if you’re making a nano tank for a convention, but even then you should only have it in there for the smallest amount of time and put it back into a bigger tank when the display is over.
of course, you will need to have a filter running in your tank (a hob would be best as it takes up the least room) but you would have to still do water changes every other day.
Courtney M – you should never keep betta’s, or any fish, in a fish bowl or 5g tank. how would you like it if someone put you in a 6ft high, 3 x 3 ft glass box and only gave you air for 10 mins every day?

Because it works in the wild doesn’t mean it can be done in captivity.

~I can’t find much information on them at all. Just the same article, and blogs chatting about the article.
Courtney- Please do more research and ask some questions about bettas before buying one.
