Fish can eat themselves to death, however, provided you don't get to this point they will produce more wastes which can lead to over loading your biological filtration system. With time the bacteria in the tank should adjust to the added amonia and nitrites and break these chemicals down into Nitrates. Nitrates can be used as a food source to grow live plants.

The added ammonia and Nitrites can lead to disease and death in your fish. This is why you shouldn't over feed, add a bunch of fish to a tank all at once, and the primary reason you let your tank cycle when you first set it up.

have had fish for many years and used to work a fish shop.

A good bet would be that the fish died, then the algae eater attacked the body and did the damage you see. There are a few bacterial skin diseases that can cause scales to fall off, but they would also take a few days to kill the fishand leave large bloody sores during those few days. No doubt you would have noticed the sores before the fish died, so I would thing the damage was done after it died of unrelated causes.

You named the ones I was thinking of! I did keep an angel fish in my 5 gallon aquarium for about 3 yrs...

26 years of keeping and spawning many different species of tropical fish and cichlids. 23 tanks up and running at present. I have worked in both the retail and wholesale tropical fish business.

If you are not using it, putting it away somewhere where it won't get broken is fine. Glass tanks with silicone sealant don't rot or anything, so you don't have to worry about it deteriorating. You can also put padding around it if it's a large tank, like blankets so nothing accidentally hits it. Glass tanks break more easily when there is no water in them.

almost all tropical fish will get along. even Angel fish with the little neons.

I was told that angels like to come into an established community. therefore, have the silver dollars in the tank for a few days before you get the angels and introduce them into the tank.

Otherwise, they will should get along fine.

Athough they can grow big, they won't grow too big for the tank, i have a 35 litre tank of only angels at one stage and they grew to no bigger than 4cm. i asked the people at the pet sotre and they said that they wouldn't grow any bigger because of the number of fish i have. if i knly had 1 or 2 they would grow bigger.

They are all in the same tank at the pet store i go to.

4 years of having a tropical tank with angels, sharks, and other fish.
