You will usually always need a pump with fish. There is a less likely chance they will live that long without it.
If you are talking about a pond or something like that its fine.

I Have fish and there are 5 catfish and three goldfish.

The filter will do just fine! The air pump is just for looks! All you need is the filter! Don’t let a pet store talk you into it unless you want pretty bubbles in your tank or pond!

Although an airpump adds oxygen to an aquarium it isn’t required. If the filter hangs on the side of the filter it already creates enough oxygen in the water.

The air pump brings more oxygen into the water, which is always a good thing. Only a filter “will do”, but having the pump will be even better.

filter is enough. it will create enough circulation on its own.

Your filter sould do just fine as long as it puts enough air into the water while it runs. Personally all my 115 gallons of fishtanks have air pumps in them but it really is at your discretion.

You NEED an air pump. I’d recommend for a thirty gallon, a Top Fin 60 gallon air pump with a 28” bubble wall. It’s what I use in one of my thirty gallon tropical community tanks. Not only does it create more disolved oxygen for your fish to breathe easier but it also can increase the lifespan of your fish. It’s a proven fact! No, I’m not a PetsMart representative or anything like that… I’ve just done this enough times to know. I used to go with the idea just a filter “will do” and my fish didn’t live longer than a year. Another great thing about adding extra oxygen to your tank, you can safely increase your fish population without worrying about suffocation. As I’m sure you know, the rule is 1” per gallon and with a filter plus a bubble wall/airstone, you can usually increase that 1 1/2” – 2” per gallon, if you keep your water clean by doing regular water changes. I’m sure you know to do 25% water changes every two weeks, right? You can also do 50% water changes once a month but I wouldn’t recommend that dramatic of a water change. Good luck to you!

Use a filter and the bubble maker, both will help create better water quality and happier fish. The more air circulation the better.
