How many flakes do you feed 3 goldfish?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I recently had a 4 year old (fancy) goldfish die and decided to get a new one. I went to the store and saw 3 of the cutest goldfish! I was planning on getting one, but I couldn’t just take one of these goldfish home. I had a goldfish so I thought I had everything, but I needed more food, and this leaves me with 2 questions. What kind of food do you feed goldfish, I fed my other fish Tetra Tropical flakes(and it lived pretty long) , but was told to take Tetra Goldfish flakes for these fish. Which one is better?
Another question is how many flakes do I feed three goldfish. With my other fish I fed him way more then I was supposed to, yet he led a long life, and was very active. However I am not sure how many flakes to feed these fish, they are also very active, and eat plenty of food. Please answer my questions!
What type of food should I use for my goldfish?
How many flakes should I feed my goldfish?

Thank you

Flake food of any type is good for goldfishes, and you only feed them bit by bit, as much they can eat within 5-10 minutes.

Even if they are eating beyond that time, do not feed anymore. Its always good to have a little less fed fish rather than a overfed fish.

i use the same brand and the container is orange and white it will say goldfish food right on it..Also you only have to give them a small pinch real small like only twice a day more then that would be too much..

Definitley use flakes made for goldfish, much better for them. But instead of just feeding them flakes, goldfish will love all sorts of other foods such as apples, grapes, oranges, lettuce, cucumber, etc. Worms, krill, tubifex too. As to how much to feed them, feed as much as they will eat in a few minutes. You don’t want food leftover in the tank, but you want to make sure they get enough. Only feed them once a day as well.

Food formulated for the specific breed is best, because it includes ingredients that they would eat in the wild. For feeding, they should need no more than a small pinch a day. This is equivalent to about 1/8 of a teaspoon – a very small amount. Don’t worry about them getting hungry in between – they likely won’t, but if they do, they will naturally scavenge algae growth from the tank and (yuck) feces.

first off, goldfish can easily live well over 10years if cared for properly, so 4 yrs ins’t long at all. so keep in mind all of the things I am going to say are not to be mean or to critisize you, but to help you get the most years possible out of your new friends.

    1. tropical fish food is for tropical fish (tetras and such). goldfish food is for goldfish. however, fancies can get swim bladder problems very easily because of their round bodies, so I’d suggest pellets instead. then soak the pellets for 2-3minutes in water before feeding to fish. I’d say 2 pellets per fish twice a day or 3 pellets once a day per fish I’d also recommend checking out the ingredients on the back, you don’t need to get the most expensive, but look for quality.
    2. you had one fancy before, so make sure your tank is able to hold three fancies. eventually they’ll need a minimum of a 30gallon tank with a good filter.
    3. to make sure they’re getting proper nutrition I suggest feeding them things you probably wouldn’t think of feeding them. like an orange slice once or twice a month. peas are a good treat too that help prevent constipation.

    good luck :)

Goldfish need a balanced diet. When choosing a fish food choose one with high protein (48% or better) and low fat (5% or less)

You can supplement their diet with things like Lettuce, mustard greens, turnip greens, collard greens, spinach, peas, endive, seaweed, cukes, kale, chard, broccoli, lima beans, green beans, etc. and feed aquatic plants (e.g. duckweed, azolla, salvenia, etc) or hair algae daily.

For their Carotenoids which are a family of pigments the fish can’t make themselves and are obtained as part of the diet. These pigments result in red, yellow and orange colors. Fish have cells called chromataphores. Those cells convert lutein and carotenes into astaxanthin which is the red pigment.
sources include, brine shrimp, krill, spirulina, marigold flowers, paprika, sweet red peppers, yams, carrots, pumpkin

Watermellons and oranges are also good as well as proteins like chicken (chicken livers) beef (livers and parts) and pork as well as worms and bugs.

As far as flake foods, pellets really are better for goldfish since flake food isn’t as "stick with it" food like pellets and the number of other foods listed above are. Goldies do not have stomachs so they need to be fed 2-3 times per day not just once. This is why they always seem so hungry and why people think they are "dirty" fish. It isn’t a matter of how many flakes.

Most people underfeed their fish vs. over feed. Chances are you fed your other fish properly which is why he lived so long. Good job.
