Do NOT take the advice of Petsmart employees!! They are SALES people first and foremost!!!

Angelfish should be kept in tall tanks. You "could" keep a pair in a 20 gallon long, but the fish would not thrive. Angels develop long fins (top and bottom), and need tall style tanks. Ideally, a pair would be kept in nothing smaller than a 30 gallon tall.

Regarding your betta, check your temperature. Make sure the heater is working and that the water is between 78F – 85F. Bettas will become inactive and lose color intensity when they are too cold. You can keep neons with a betta but I would not recommend a community tank with bettas in anything smaller than a 10 gallon tank.

I read angels are generally 30g+, but since its long, Im not really sure. And i’ve had no experience with bettas, so I cant help you there

I see no harm in doing so. I wouldn’t put any Barbs in with Angels. I would try Plattys, Swordtails, Mollies, Gouramis. I wouldn’t put Neons in with the Betta, though, because I have had the experience with Bettas attacking Neons.

Angelfish are bigger fish and even though they could fit in the same tank I would recommend that you should not put the two angelfish in a tank together since the tank is not big enough for the fish’s waste.

For the beta fish… they usually do not swim around a whole lot like other fish. Don’t worry- just make sure hes eating and the tank is clean.

Going to PetSmart for fish advice is like asking the kid at McDonalds for nutritional advice. It just doesn’t work very well.

A 20 long does not have the water depth for angels, who are tall fish, with long flowing fins. You will end up with stunted angels if they live long enough to escape the bacterial infections that will develop from their fins dragging on the bottom.

In a 20 high you could keep a single angel with a few smaller fish, or a breeding pair & nothing else, provided the individual or pair are standard fin angels. For veils you need the depth that a 29 provides.
